Oh you knew you weren’t going to escape without a lecture so just you be quiet you…
The Motor Cycle Diaries - a little known movie about two blokes who went on a holiday. Whoo Hoo you cry – a road movie. But the interesting thing about this little holiday jaunt was that one of the travelers was Che Guevara – yes that Communist bloke on your Mambo T-Shirt with the little beard and the silly beret who did something in the Cuban revolution, died young and became a really cool screen print.
Does everyone remember what a Communist is? Well, think of it this way. Nowadays if you don’t like someone coming into your country, killing your family, torturing your friends, nicking your resources and turning you out of your homes in the name of progress you are called a ‘terrorist’ or an ‘insurgent’. But in the olden days if you didn’t like someone coming into your country, killing your family, torturing your friends, nicking your resources and turning you out of your homes in the name of progress you were called a ‘Communist’. Progress is a wonderful thing isn’t it?
And while we now consider the idea of Communism quaint, back then Communists were very bad people. They would hide under beds, leap out at unsuspecting innocents and lecture them about third world poverty at inopportune moments, like just when they were trying to SMS their Australian Idol choice. They truly were heartless bastards.
Communism is like an infection. If you want to avoid being contaminated just stay away from poverty and suffering. In The Motor Cycle Diaries Che made the fatal mistake of experiencing the suffering, misery and disenfranchisement of the people he met during his road trip throughout South America and then trying to do something about it and he became infected Communist ideals. Fortunately he was humanely put down by the American government a few years later, a vaccine called ‘consumerism’ was developed and Communism has now virtually been wiped out. But strangely enough people still continue to suffer in the name of progress – go figure.
